Поход с участием волонтеров
How would you feel if your trek could do more that can genuinely change something for someone else too. The mountains of Nepal are truly special, but the local people living in the mountains often face real and serious problem such as lack of proper education, poor access to health care services, inadequate infrastructure and increasing difficulties caused by climate change to their agriculture and water supply. At Epic Trek Nepal, we believe travel is most meaningful when it creates a positive impact on the people, communities and the places encountered along the way.
Our Trek with Volunteer Work program is designed for travelers who want to combine the adventure of trekking in the Himalayas with a bit of contribution to the communities they pass through. It is not about charity tourism or short-term gestures, it is about showing up, getting involved, and leaving something lasting behind.
Combining Travel with Community Service
In the Trek with Volunteer Work Service, one or more days are spend doing volunteer work in the community. Instead of walking from one village to another village without interacting with people, you stop there and interact with the locals and do something meaningful like repairing school building, planting trees or supporting local health camp.
There is a lot of flexibility about balancing the trekking part and volunteering time during the trek. You can dedicate entire one day only to volunteer work or build the entire itinerary around a series of volunteer placement, with trekking as the thread that connect them.
Each volunteer placement has been planned in advance, as each of our projects is conducted in collaboration with the local community/organisation. We don’t just surprise with a group and think that we will prove to be useful, this is a waste of time for everyone.
Виды волонтерской работы
The kind of work that we offer depend on the real requirement of our partner communities at any particular time. The current type of word we have include:
Образовательная поддержка: Helping teachers in village schools with teaching English, basic literacy and numeracy lessons, or in preparing materials for class. This is quite common in the remote parts of the Khumbu, Langtang, and Annapurna areas due to the scarcity of English teachers in these areas.
Maintenance of Schools and Building: Activities such as painting the school walls, fixing desks and furniture, cleaning the compound or even some building activities under the guidance of local communities.
Охрана окружающей среды: This includes planting trees on deforested slopes, maintenance of trails, removal of unwanted species or even cleanup work in areas affected by trekking waste.
Helping Local Families with Organic Farming: Assist local families during the farming season in their agriculture activities or in community-based projects related to organic farming and kitchen gardens.
Supporting Vulnerable and Low-Income families: In many homes in the remote mountain areas, there is a shortage of basic requirements including food, safe housing, and social support. Through volunteers’ efforts along with that of local coordinators, some of the most vulnerable families receive support via provision of necessary resources and involvement in community development activities organized by our partnering organizations.
Water and Tap Water Installations Project: One of the major needs for people in rural communities in Nepal is the supply of fresh water. Families have to travel miles daily to fetch their required quantity of water from risky areas. In this volunteering project, participants will contribute towards setting up tap water installations and pipelines in villages using manual labor such as laying pipes and digging trenches.
Ethical Volunteering Guidelines
If Volunteering tourism done irresponsibly, it can be dangerous as it can lead to disruption or dependence of workers in communities.
Community Led, not tourist led. All the volunteer activities that we sponsor are well planned by the community or organization where it will be implemented. Projects in our program are those required by the communities or local organizations. We do not set projects in motion based on what the volunteers want to do.
We do not offer volunteer placements for orphanages and childcare. No research has indicated that short-term placements of volunteers in orphanages or childcare institutions have any positive impact on the growth of children. If any volunteer program involves working with children, then we only arrange it in schools where teachers are available at all times.
Fair contribution. Volunteer participants pay a program fee that covers the cost of materials, community coordination, local staff time, and a direct contribution to the partner organization. This ensures the community is compensated for hosting and organizing the volunteer experience rather than absorbing an additional burden.
Transparency in results. We inform our participants honestly regarding what can be achieved during such short-term volunteering activities. Every hour of voluntary work is valuable, yet it would be wrong to exaggerate its importance. Those who felt involved in the community may help further through donations or repeated visits.
