Sustainable Tourism

The Himalayas are some of the world’s most magical destination on earth. But they are also very fragile environmentally, socially and culturally. Each tourist, who gets ready to explore the mountains and takes a step along the trail, is becoming a part of something greater than they expect. It involves the natural environment, cultural heritage, and livelihood of local communities.

As Epic Trek Nepal, we recognize our responsibilities to the environment, locals, and future generations in a true sense of this word. Sustainable tourism is not just another word for us, it is about making responsible decisions during each of our trips, hiring local guides and porters, and helping to preserve unique environment through our travels.

We provide detailed information regarding sustainable tourism and responsible travels below.

Environmental Responsibilities

We ensure that we strictly follow the regulations set by Nepal National Parks and Conservation Areas like Sagarmatha, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu. Our guides lead groups on marked trails and don’t disturb wildlife policy.

Waste Management

Waste is one of the main problems on every trek in Nepal. To ensure waste management, we strictly follow pack-it-in-pack-it-out principle. Instead of using plastic bottle, we encourage trekkers to use refillable bottles and drink purified water using purification tables. During our trek, waste is sorted by our staff at every stop, and those items that are non-degradable are taken back to designated disposal site instead of burning or burying.

Support Local Communities

Our motives are not only providing exceptional trekking experience to our clients. We also aim at improving the lives of people who live here. We use local guide, porter and including those from the trekking communities themselves. We use mainly family-owned teahouses and food that are grown locally, so that money remain in local communities. All of our staff gets paid fairly enough to support their livelihood, provide all the equipment they require and even insurance in accordance with the International Porter Protection Group (IPPG) Standards.

Responsible Trekking Principles

Before every trek, we give our client a brief on how to travel responsibly in the Himalayas.

  • Respect Local Culture: Don’t do anything that is considered disrespect to the locals like walk clockwise around monasteries, dress properly, don’t disturb locals, and don’t touch religious items.
  • Stay on Trial: Always stick to the designated path. Taking shortcuts and walking off trails will just create confusing.
  • Altitude and Safety: Never rush during acclimatization. Always walk at your own comfortable speed, drink water time to time and follow guides instruction.
  • Waste and Environment: Take all trash back to home including plastics, batteries, wrappers, personal hygiene items and only throw them at garbage site.
  • Protect Wildlife and Nature: Observe wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing plants, animals and natural habits.

Cultural Conservation

The monasteries, stupas, mani walls, and traditional culture of Nepal are expressions of culture and spirituality, not tourist attractions. Our guides help our clients on how to behave in a manner that shows respect throughout their journey:

  • Dress modestly in religious places; take off their shoes when necessary.
  • Move in a clockwise direction around stupas and mani walls.
  • Ask permission to photograph people.
  • Never touch or move religious objects or offerings.

We also support cultural preservation through donation to heritage site maintenance and local artisan communities in the regions we visit.

Ethical Tourism Commitments

Our commitment, in simple terms

  • To our guide and porter – fair wages, healthy and safe work conditions, proper equipment, and total insurance.
  • To our customers – open communication, accurate prices, and real concern about your well-being.
  • To nature – reducing our footprint, being responsible toward the environment, and striving for constant improvement.
  • To the local community – using locally sourced workers and services, fair trade, and making sustainable investments.
  • To Nepal’s cultural legacy – showing respect and actively participating in its preservation.

We are associated with Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), TAAN, Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), and follow Leaves No Trace (LNT) guidelines and IPPG porter standards.

Every trek with Epic Trek Nepal is a small but real contribution to the kind of tourism Nepal deserves, one that protects its mountains, supports its people, and preserves its culture for those who come next.
