The Tarebhir Hike is a shorter hike located near Kathmandu, known specifically for the impressive cliff viewpoint from which the get its name. This hike provides a relatively easy escape into Nepal’s hills for visitors who wish to get some hiking experience without committing to a full trekking program.

Tarebhir lies within the hills surrounding the Kathmandu Valley, located in a region covered by pine forests common to the mid-hill regions around Kathmandu. The Tarebhir Hike is popular because it provides an accessible opportunity to hike near Kathmandu. This trek does not attract visitors because of distance or elevation gain but simply by convenience.

Most tourists taking this hike want a half-day or full-day hike they can incorporate around their stay in Kathmandu after returning from another trek or spending a limited amount of time there on vacation. The highlight of the Tarebhir Hike is visiting a viewpoint situated on a cliff face offering panoramic vistas above the valley and the nearby hills. The location represents a less crowded option compared to several viewpoints in the vicinity of Kathmandu.

For any tourist trying to find a convenient hiking destination near Kathmandu that does not require obtaining trekking permits, acclimatizing to high altitudes, or making plans, our Tarebhir Hike presents a realistic choice.

What Can You See During Tarebhir Hike?

The number of views you will get to see on the Tarebhir Hike is absolutely mind blowing. One of the main rewards of the Tarebhir hike is the view from the top. On a clear day, the Tarebhir viewpoint reveals the full panoramic view of the Himalayan range which includes the Ganesh, Langtang and Jugal ranges. However, visibility depend heavily on the season and climate conditions, which means that viewing the mountains can never be fully guaranteed. Choosing Autumn and springtime tend to bring clearer skies than summer.

In addition to distant mountains, hikers will also enjoy expansive views over the entire valley. It gives a distinct perspective to the views of the valley compared to the viewpoints nearer to Kathmandu City. Most of the time the hike follows the forest path, especially when the track reaches the Shivapuri National Park region, making much of the trail course cool and shady under pine woods for a reasonable time.

Lower stretches cross the local village areas and agricultural lands, allowing travelers to see daily rural life in these areas outside Kathmandu Valley. Terraced farms, village houses, and locals can be seen moving around. When it comes to sunrise/sunset at the top of the trail, remember that this is done as a day hike and therefore if viewing the sunrise/sunset at Tarebhir is an important part of your experience then you should discuss your dates with us.

Difficult Level of Tarebhir Hike

Tarebhir Hike is classified as a moderate difficulty hike than hard difficulty due to factors including shorter duration, low technicality, and low altitude compared to other hiking opportunities within Nepal. However, while moderate difficulty, this hike does not involve constant flat walking – there are some aspects worth recognizing ahead of planning.

Is it beginner-friendly? For the most part, yes. People who hike this trail are often new to hiking or do not have any other trekking experience. But being beginner-friendly does not imply that it’s easy, you still have to walk uphill for quite some time.

Uphill/downhill sections: The route to Jagdol leads gradually up to the Tarebhir viewpoint, where elevation gain occurs both along the forest trail and through the ridgeline. There are some relatively easy sections through farmlands and villages as well as steeper parts nearer the ridge. The way back is similar to the way up but, of course, going down makes it easier on your lungs but harder on your knees.

Kathmandu Return: After completing the trek and having lunch at Tarebhir, you make your way down to Jagdol, where the very same vehicle will pick them up and take them back into Kathmandu.

As the whole experience is done as a one-day trek with the private transportation at both ends of the tour, it becomes a good choice for those travelers who would like to go on a hike near Kathmandu. We will be happy to help you coordinate the pick-up and return to match your schedule if you have any.
