Recognized as the world’s 5th highest mountain in the world, Mt. Makalu is one of the extraordinary and less explored trekking trail of Nepal situated at 8,485m (27,838 feet). Makalu Base Camp Trek route reveals the panoramic views of majestic eight-thousanders, like, Everest (8,848.86 m), Makalu (8,463 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Kanchenjunga (8,586 m), etc., as well as diverse landscapes ranging from lush forests to alpine meadows and rugged rocky terrains. The trekkers can get a unique opportunity to explore the remote village that maintains traditional ways of life.
This 18-day journey to Makalu Base Camp begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar, a small town in Sankhuwasabha district. And a short drive to Num, where your trek starts. Then the route gradually ascends through terraced farmland, subtropical forests, and past small settlements, giving trekkers a chance to experience the rich cultural heritage of the region, including Rai and Sherpa communities.
As you continue your trek towards Makalu Base Camp, the adventurous activity increases, the valleys are narrow, there are glaciers on the way, and the stone trails are steeper. Trekkers need to go up around 5,000 meters at Makalu Base Camp, which rewards them with a panoramic view of Makalu and other surrounding peaks.
Trek Difficulty
Makalu Base Camp would be a challenging trek due to longer days at high altitude. Passing through the remote area requires good stamina and both physical and mental preparation. The most important thing for trekkers is to adjust their bodies to the higher altitude—take time to acclimatize properly during the Makalu Base Camp Trek. When trekkers cross the pass, they feel a real sense of achievement; the difficulty is worth it with the sight of breathtaking mountains.
Best Season for Makalu Base Camp Trek
Spring (March to May)
One of the most popular seasons for Makalu Base Camp Trek, providing excellent visibility of panoramic views. The temperature of this season ranges from -10°C to 10°C (nights can be freezing), this is the best time for flowers, wildlife and clear mountain views. You get to see lush greenery and colorful alpine flowers in lower elevations as well crystal-clear views of Everest, Makalu, and Baruntse from the base camp.
Autumn (September to November)
This season offers the most reliable weather conditions as the atmosphere filled with festival’s vibe. The views of mountains are sharp after the monsoon washes dust away. The temperature ranges from (-12°C to 12°C), the skies are deep blue, and the trails are dry and well-defined.
Winter (December to February)
Due to its landscape covered in snow, Trek to Makalu Base Camp is difficult in winter because of heavy snowfall, ice buildup, and risk of avalanches. The temperature can drop below -20°C, and there is high chance of snow blocking the passes like Shipton La. Only those enthusiasts of adventure with proper planning and winter gear should consider this period with experienced guides.
Monsoon (June to August)
Monsoon brings the heavy rain, and we don’t recommend Makalu Base Camp Trek this period. Due to poor visibility, slippery leech-filled trails, frequent landslides and flight cancellation add extra disturbance in your trek.

Pack appropriate gear to protect yourself from unpredictable weather conditions. Layering works best; it allows you to adjust clothing based on temperature changes during the day.
Know your limits and listen to your body. If you’re feeling unwell or exhausted, take rest days or turn back if necessary.
Keep emergency contacts accessible and inform friends or family about your itinerary before beginning on this adventure. It is always wise to plan for unforeseen circumstances while trekking through stunning landscapes.
