Tsho Rolpa Trek, is a hidden gem of Nepal nestled inside the Rolwaling Valley in Nepal. It is one of Nepal’s most remarkable glacial lakes, standing at an altitude of about 4,580 meters. It is actually the largest glacial lake in Nepal, which has a deep turquoise color. The lake reflects the surrounding snow-capped peaks, creating a magical scenery.
Other than being a remarkable glacial lake, Tsho Rolpa is also a major water supply for the local people around that area. Even though it’s a beautiful natures gift, it is still a dangerous glacial lake due to the glacial activity that tends to threaten the possibility of a flood. Visiting this place gives you a unique chance to appreciate the power and calmness found within nature located at the heart of the Himalayas.
A trek to Tsho Rolpa offers you a very rare opportunity to feel the beauty of the high Himalayas, see glacier at close range, and experience the peace and magic of nature. This region is surrounded by Sherpa community, and this combination of breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage take you to a very offbeat place. Whether you are a nature lover, adventure seeker or photography person, Tsho Rolpa is definitely going to impress you.

Trip Map of Tsho Rolpa Trek
Trip Information
Trek Difficulty
The Tsho Rolpa Trek is rated as a moderate trek, but it is still necessary to have a reasonable level of fitness. The trail is a gradual ascent, either through a forest or the valley or the high alpine region, with steeper path toward the lake and the glaciers. The daily trekking time is around 4 to 7 hours depending on your pace.
The trek ascends to an altitude of around 4,580 meter at Tsho Rolpa Lake, so it’s important to be aware of altitude sickness symptoms when hiking these regions. Acclimatization days may be necessary because mild altitude sickness may occur when hiking to high altitudes, particularly when hiking too quickly.
Though there is no requirement for any mountaineering skills, it is necessary to have the capability to trek for long with some rugged terrain or potentially rugged paths in between. Trekkers with some moderate trek experiences or with some better cardiovascular endurance can easily accomplish this trek. A beginner trekker with sufficient preparation can also do this trek with no issues.
Why choose Tsho Rolpa Trek?
Tsho Rolpa Trek is ideal for all adventurers who want to explore the Himalayas but far away from the crowded trails. It’s an opportunity for all nature lovers who wish to see untouched beauty, and they will be treated with the sight of Nepal’s largest glacial lake, glaciers, and mountain vistas.
It is also a trek for those who enjoy discovering and experiencing new cultures and traditions. Passing through Sherpa villages, visiting monasteries, witnessing the daily life of the Himalayas – there’s more to a trek in the Himalayas than just walking.
For the adventure lover, it offers a mix of challenge and reward. The Tsho Rolpa Lake trekking trails are challenging enough but also offer the adventurer the thrill of exploring high-altitude routes without necessarily mounting an actual peak.
At last, for those people who are looking for an adventure trek away from the huge crowd and a peaceful Himalayan experience, there is also the Tsho Rolpa Trek. It will give you an experience that will be engraved in your memories forever with incredible photos and a deep respect for the beauty of Nepal.
Local and Cultural Experience
One of the most rewarding experiences you can have on your Tsho Rolpa Trek is interaction with the friendly Sherpa people who inhabit this remote region of the Himalayan mountains. These Sherpa villages allow you to get a glimpse into their lives, including how they farm, raise animals, and preserve their culture in these mountains. You might even get the opportunity to visit some of the small monasteries or enjoy a cup of tea with locals along the trek.
It is important to respect local culture and traditions when trekking. Things like greeting villagers, requesting to take photographs, and wearing modest clothes can help build goodwill. As you passed through Beding and other villages, you could see stone houses, fluttering flags, and mani walls engraved with Buddhist mantras. When visiting monasteries, you might even catch a glimpse of monks chanting or doing ritual as part of their daily routine.
Hospitality is very simple but sincere. Villagers often invite trekkers for a cup of tea or just to chat, curious about where you’re from and eager to share stories about their land. Cultural life in Rolwaling is very related to nature. They have immense respect for mountains and glaciers because they believe natural element are sacred. It’s a discovery of a unique culture that is far away from modern culture which makes the trek to Tsho Polpa more than just a scenery trek. It’s an opportunity to understand how life continues quietly and peacefully in one of Nepal’s most remote Himalayan regions.
Accommodation and Food
The type of accommodation you will find on the Tsho Rolpa Trek are commonly tea houses or local lodges. These teahouses are run by local families, offering a warm place to rest and have a warm meal. Accommodation is provided with twin rooms, with warm bed and blankets, but bringing your sleeping bags will also help, especially at higher altitude. In some places like Beding or Na, there are limited facilities, but it is still enough to keep you warm and rest for your upcoming journey.
The food on the trail is mostly traditional but fresh. It is enough to restore the energy and keep you filled for your journey. The most common meal is dal bhat, which you can refill until you are full and is exactly what is needed after a long day of trekking. Access to drinking water is also available, but it is important that you drink it after purifying it with purification tablets or water filter. You can also try hot drinks like tea, ginger lemon and milk tea which are mostly popular, especially during cold weather. You can also eat noodles, fried rice, soup, potatoes and eggs whch becomes a part of your experience.
Permits and Fee
You will need some trekking permits to do trek in Tsho Rolpo Lake. The major one is the TIMS card, which is mandatory for the majority of the trekking route in Nepal. This permit helps in tracking trekker and enhancing safety in the remote areas.
Apart from the TIMS card, you will also require entry permission for GCAP because the Rolwaling Valley falls under this protected area. For Tsho Rolpa Trek, Sagarmatha National Park permit is not required as it doesn’t enter the Everest region, which is often a point of confusion for many trekkers.
The TIMS card costs around USD 20$ for international trekkers, whie the Gaurishankar Conservation Area Permit costs around USD 25$ per person. If you are going with a trusted agency like Epic Trek Nepal, you don’t have to worry about any paperwork because all the necessary permits and documents will be handled by us, which allows you to trek comfortably and smoothly without worrying about anything.

The best of the best
