The journey to the hidden wonders of the Himalayas, Upper Mustang Trek. A classic 14 Day trek takes you through mystical and breathtaking landscapes of the Mustang region in Nepal. The “Last Forbidden Kingdom” nestled at 3,880m at the northwest part of Nepal.
The Upper Mustang Trek takes you through the Kingdom of Lo, an area renowned for its mystique and remoteness. The area was completely closed for foreigners till 1992. This makes Mustang the Last Forbidden Kingdom offering travelers a mysterious environment that you cannot find in other places of Nepal. As you travel you will feel like you have walked back in time.
There is no doubt that Mustang has a close connection to Tibet. You can see the traces of Tibetan culture almost everywhere. The language spoken, people, monasteries and even food are all influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. There is a fortified walled city known as Lo Manthang, which was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mustang that still exists today as a living museum. The current king, Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista, has made an essential contribution to preserving this unique culture.
Mustang is often known as Little Tibet which has a complex history dating back to the 8th century. Legends and myths shroud its early days, and there are records of visits by historical figures like the Tibetan poet Milarepa. The landscape mirrors the Tibetan plateau, featuring yellow and grey rolling hills, red fluted cliffs, and distant villages that appear like mirages in the desert-like expanse.
The Upper Mustang Trek can last anywhere from 14 to 17 days, depending on how fast you hike and what route you take. You arrive at Jomsom from Pokhara via a flight and trek north through an impressive landscape filled with passes and monasteries.
One unique feature of the Upper Mustang Trek is the need to acquire the restricted permit since this trek place is located in restricted region. This requirement alone has managed to preserve the trek’s pristine and untamed wilderness.
If you want to have a trek with the perfect combination of nature, culture, and history, then you can find all of them in the Upper Mustang Trek.
Upper Mustang Trek Route
The Upper Mustang Trek begins with your arrival in Kathmandu where you will spend one full day planning and organizing all necessary permits. Once this is done, you will head toward Pokhara and from there continue overland until you reach Kagbeni at 2,850 meters, the main gateway to Upper Mustang Region.
Once you enter the region, the trek route continues taking you farther and farther north into an increasingly dramatic landscape. Your trail takes you past Chele, Syanbochen, and Ghami and during the trek, the landscape changes entirely to this amazing high altitude desert environment.
Continuing from Ghami, the trek heads towards Charang and then finally arrives at Lo Manthang located at an altitude of 3,840m, which is known to be the walled capital of the Mustang Kingdom. This trip includes a full day of leisure where you will have all the time to walk around the palace, the monasteries and get lost among the narrow alleyways of this wonderful historic city.
For the return journey, the Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary takes a different route designed for you, which again makes the experience all the more interesting, covering places like Drakmar, Ghiling, and Chhuskang before heading to the town of Jomsom. After reaching Jomsom , a flight from here takes you back to Pokhara and from there you will return to Kathmandu on Day 16.
Who can join Upper Mutang Trek
The Upper Mustang View Trek is open to all trekkers from all over the country, but it suits those who have some trekking experience. It not like beginners cannot do this trek, it just means it would be helpful if you have previous trekking experience, basic fitness or even if you have done long hiking.
Most trekkers who join this trek are within the age range of 18 to 65 year’s old. Even older trekkers who are fit and mentally prepared have completed this trek successfully in the past.
The hike includes walking for about 5–7 hours per day along high-altitude desert trails. Some altitudes may be close to 4,000 meters, which means it will take time for your body to adapt. People who suffer from heart and respiratory diseases should ask their doctor for advice.
There are plenty of rest days on the Upper Mustang Trek to help with gradual acclimatization. So that the trek becomes an easy to complete for any trekkers as long as they prepare themselves before trekking.
From solo travelers to couples, small groups, and even fully organized tour groups, everybody does the trek. After all, the trek is meant for those who seek thrill and have a passion for it.
