Currency Guide for Traveling to Nepal
When traveling to Nepal, it’s advisable to bring Nepalese Rupees (NPR) for payments as most services, meals, and drinks are quoted in NPR. However, you can also bring US dollars, British pounds, Australian dollars, or Euros and exchange them at local exchange booths.
Be aware that exchange rates may differ from those published by the Central Bank of Nepal. Ensure foreign currency notes are in good condition to avoid difficulty exchanging them.
For better rates, visit a local bank in Kathmandu with your passport, bearing in mind that banks typically close early on Fridays and are closed on Saturdays.
While ATMs offer the best exchange rates, they often charge a fee of around $5 per transaction. Additionally, there are withdrawal limits of NPR 100,000 per day and NPR 35,000 per transaction, so multiple transactions may be necessary.
If using cards, inform your card issuer of your travel plans to avoid issues with international transactions.
