Most people come to Nepal with a check list and everyone main priority is to trek Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp. But the one who have done trek both, they will recommend you the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek. It’s just hits different than other treks.
The Annapurna Circuit Trek doesn’t do any showoff acts. It earns your respect step by step. You start the trek comfortably walking through rice paddies, farms, valleys under comfortable temperature thinking this is nice and manageable. Then somewhere around seventh day, you will reach at an altitude of 5,416 meter on Thorang La. This is where you start to feel the pressure of the air and wind blowing through all of your layer at once.
And then comes Tilicho Lake. Unlike most lake that lies in high altitude which appear cold and distant, this lake feels very personal. Tilicho Lake sits at an altitude of 4,919 m, surrounded by rocks and ice on all sides, the lake simply stays there still, dark and reflecting the sky. The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho lake Trek gets its reputation from its harsh but awe-inspiring excursion.
The reason why the trek is unique is not only the scenery, but also a transition. The transition between villages of the Gurung community and villages of the Manangi people. The transition from villages that belong to Nepal to villages that belong more to Mustang. Different languages, different cuisines, and different lifestyles.
And the path is one which will not let you rest easy. Suddenly, the narrow gorges will open out into wide valleys. Suddenly prayer flags will appear on mountain ridges, it’s almost as if the peaks themselves are leaving messages for you. There’s always some surprise waiting for you at the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho lake.
Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Route
The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary follows an arc around the entire Annapurna region. This isn’t a circular route, but a point-to-point trek which mean the landscape doesn’t repeat throughout the trek. It’s a journey that keep on going without giving you any change to skip ahead.
The journey starts with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani which gives you the glimpse of the trek from picturesque valleys to small villages. When you get off the drive and take your first step into the mountain, you are already miles away from where you started. From there you will start moving north which is the path of Annapurna Circuit. Between the trek you will reach villages like Chame, Upper Pisang, Ngawal, Bhraka, and finally Manang.
From Manang, the trails separate from the main Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary trails and follows toward Shree Kharka, Tilicho Base Camp and then ends at Tilicho Lake standing at 4,919 m. After you reach the Tilicho Lake, you will begin your trek to the Annapurna Circuit that reconnect with the main circuit trail, crossing through places like Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi before reaching the main highlight of this trekking adventure: Throng La Pass standing at 5,416 meters. Crossing this pass is the most challenging yet rewarding experience in the entire trek.
Now the descent part begins that look very different from what you have experience in high altitude. You will reach the rain shadow zone of Mustang, which is very dry and dusty because of no rain. After Mustang, you will then arrive at Muktinath, which is one of the spiritual parts of trek and most sacred pilgrimage sites in Asia.
Your trek will finally come to a close in Jomsom where after a short flight you will reach Pokhara again. This Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek has it all – long routes, variations in scenery, and no boring moment at all.

Activity: Arrival
Max. Altitude: 1400m./4,593ft.
Meal: Dinner
Accommodation: 3 Star Hotel
Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani
You should make sure that you get to the window seat on this trip as we’re getting out of Kathmandu early and heading northwest in our tourist transport vehicle to the Marsyangdi Valley. Well, I have to admit that the journey will not be very short, but believe me when I say that the scenery will be worth seeing.
We keep on climbing up in the hills and eventually arrive in the small town of Besisahar, which used to be the starting point of the Annapurna circuit way back then. However, going there by road saves us two days that we could use hiking through the more enjoyable parts of the trail.
At the between of Marsyangdi and Dudh Khola Rivers, surrounded by forested hills and snowy peaks, we reach the town of Dharapani, the end point of the first part of our trip. It is such a small and extremely calm village you won’t even imagine how different it is from noisy Kathmandu. Enjoy the evening in your tea house and taste some food.
Activity: 8 to 9 hours drive
Max. Altitude: 1860m./6,102ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 3: Dharapani to Chame
Our trekking trail takes us upwards along the Marsyangdi River today, and from here on, the views become increasingly stunning. The day will take us past the village of Bagarchhap, which marks one of the earliest Tibetan settlements along the path. The change in architectural style will be immediately obvious when passing through the homes will have transformed to flat-roofed stone structures with beautifully detailed mani walls.
Following this, our trail will lead us through these thick forests of pine and oak trees, which then open up to reveal an absolutely massive rock face called the Paungda Danda. As a huge cliff that towers out of the valley, the Paungda Danda is a breathtaking feature of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek.
We will spend our night at Chame, which is the administrative headquarters of Manang. As such, Chame comes with several facilities such as hot showers, tea houses, and a range of little shops stocked up with equipment. Check your backpacks and buy any supplies now because from here on out we’re going off into the wilds.
Activity: Trek (6 to 7 hours)
Max. Altitude: 2670m./8,760ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 4: Chame to Upper Pisang
Well, here it comes! Today is the time when the mighty Himalayas reveal their true power to the visitors. Just shortly after departing from Chame, you will turn a corner, and voila! There you have your first view of majestic Annapurna II which rises at the unbelievable height of 7,937 meters.
After passing through the village of Bratang, which is well-known for its local orchards of apples (do not hesitate to enjoy the products based on those), you will proceed ascending towards Pisang. At some point, the route will lead you across the Marsyangdi River multiple times; the views from each of several wooden and suspension bridges are simply breathtaking!
Do not forget our recommendation – spend your night in Upper Pisang rather than in Lower Pisang. The former village lies on a ridge, offering simply incomparable panoramas of the whole Annapurna range and Pisang Peak. Moreover, in Upper Pisang, you may visit the ancient local monastery before going to bed. Today you will notice altitude sickness symptoms, but all you have to do is to walk leisurely and drink lots of water.
Activity: Trek (6 to 7 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3300m./10,827ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 5: Upper Pisang to Ngawal
This morning, we are going to cross Ghyaru, which happens to be a remarkably preserved hill village with lots of traditional stone houses, and an ancient monastery decorated with fluttering prayer flags. Trust me when I say that Ghyaru offers the most breathtaking view that you will see all through Nepal. As we continue our trek, we will find Ngawal, which is a quiet, small village located at 3,657 meters altitude. Contrary to Manang, Ngawal is a smaller, isolated and less touristy place with its raw beauty.
After we reach our destination, relax for a while, drink enough water, and enjoy watching the sunset as the Annapurnas range shines with golden coloration. Remember that your body is still getting used to the altitude, thus you need to stay hydrated.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3657m./11,998ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 6: Ngwal to Manang via Bhraka
The path descends smoothly from Ngawal to take you through Bhraka, which is an adorable little village that should be visited. Bhraka is known for its old century monastery situated above the village houses. If you ascend to the viewpoint, the views will be breathtakingly impressive in the direction of Gangapurna Glacier and Manang valley in one grandiose perspective.
It is a fairly simple walk from Bhraka to Manang, though not very long. It may seem like a shorter walking day, but take your time here and stop to admire the surroundings as they appear to be very ancient and grandiose.
Manang, located on an elevation of 3,519 meters, is the place where the trek becomes quite demanding. Make sure you use this town as an opportunity to purchase some snacks, check your equipment and visit to Himalayan Rescue Association clinic where they provide a free altitude sickness presentation.
Activity: Trek (4 to 5 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3519m./11,545ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 7: Acclimatization Day at Manang
It may seem fun, but acclimatization days are absolutely necessary in order to allow the body to adjust to altitude conditions. Trying to climb without acclimatization is probably one of the top mistakes travelers make on the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek route. This is why this extra day should not be skipped under any circumstances.
The best acclimatization climb from Manang is a trek to Ice Lake, which takes place at about 4,600 meters. Though it may be challenging, you can see an amazing glacial lake and have an excellent view of the Annapurna. The formula of the best acclimatization day would be climbing high during the day and sleeping low during night. There is also an option of having an easy acclimatization trek by going to Gangapurna Lake viewpoint and visiting the old Braga monastery.
Your key activity today would be drinking plenty of water. Avoid alcohol consumption and try to get as much sleep as possible.
Activity: Acclimatization
Max. Altitude: 3900m./12,795ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 8: Manang to Shree Kharka
This is where we diverge from the main Annapurna circuit trek and head towards Tilicho Lake. Now, what makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake different from all other treks? First, you will start noticing fewer people around, and then it will take a turn that is wild and rugged.
The trail ascends quite steadily from Manang and goes through high-altitude meadows. While the trail isn’t very difficult to follow, it is quite rugged compared to the others you have walked over the past few days. The Shree Kharka is nothing but a tiny, temporary settlement with simple teahouses for travelers.
At this altitude of 4,080 m, there’s no doubt about feeling some effects of the thinner atmosphere. Spend your whole afternoon doing nothing but relaxing. Maybe do a quick walkabout in the afternoon and drink plenty of liquids before retiring early in the evening. You are in for a tough two days from here to Tilicho Lake!
Activity: Trek (4 to 5 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4080m./13,386ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 9: Shree Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp
Now we come to the hardcore bit of the journey. As you go from Shree Kharka to Tilicho Lake Base Camp, expect some of the most dangerous scree slides on Earth. This is a steep descent over rough terrain where you have no choice but to be extremely cautious about your every step.
After this difficult section, the trail will lead you to one of the grandest alpine worlds, offering breathtaking views of the majestic Tilicho Lake that will appear right in front of you. You will be amazed at the scale of mountains in this region. They seem bigger and closer than anything you’ve ever seen before.
The base camp has only a few teahouses and is just the place for preparing for the hike around the lake the next day. As for the facilities, you won’t expect anything fancy there, but as for the surrounding environment, it will leave you impressed because it’s surrounded by the huge massifs and glacial moraine.
Activity: Trek (4 to 5 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4150m./13,615ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 10: Tilicho Lake Trek and Return to Base Camp
We will be waking up very early, even before dawn, this time. This is the highlight that we have been preparing for during our entire detour. Hiking in the dead of night, under harsh and cold conditions, while struggling to reach some of the highest lakes in the world, will be done as headlamps blaze against the darkness.
It is very steep climbing to Tilicho Lake, which lies 4,919 meters above sea level. Beyond the elevation of 4,500 meters, each step feels like you are carrying an extra load. Your lungs ache for more oxygen, your feet feel as if they weigh a ton and breathing becomes difficult. But you continue moving forward because you know what await there is something that’s definitely worth.
When you reach Tilicho Lake, you will realize it is incredibly huge with its bright blue color surrounded by ice cliffs and rugged ridges. If it’s a sunny day, the reflection of the surrounding mountains in the lake will literally blow your mind. The most amazing part of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek comes when you understand exactly what brings thousands of people here from all over the world.
Activity: Trek (7 to 8 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4917m./16,132ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 11: Tilicho Base Camp to Yak Kharka
After such an intense day of walking all the way up to Tilicho Lake, the next day is much more easier and comfortable. We will leave Tilicho Base Camp and slowly turn towards the main Annapurna Circuit trail, making our way towards Yak Kharka.
This part of the trek will see a change in scenery relatively fast, moving from the icy glaciation of the Tilicho area into the open landscape that makes up the highlands of the Annapurna Circuit.
The Yak Kharka teahouses stand at 4,050 meters, just one stop before Thorong Phedi. The facilities are simple, and the village is quite small, yet it provides breathtaking views over the vast surrounding landscape. Spend some time resting your legs, eating a big, carby meal, and preparing yourself mentally for tomorrow’s journey, which is by far the longest day of your trekking adventure.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4050m./13,287ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 12: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi
This will be a very short hiking day today, and this is totally on purpose. Thorong Phedi itself is located at an altitude of 4,450 meters and is a base camp for tomorrow’s long pass hike. Arriving at this place earlier gives you an opportunity to relax, drink water, and organize yourself.
Your hike to Thorong Phedi will end during the early afternoon when you have some time left to relax, get something to eat, and prepare for tomorrow. Be sure to grab a hearty and nutritious meal since your body will be running on empty by the end of this trek.
Prepare everything you need for tomorrow as well, from organizing your clothing and food to topping up your water supply. This way you won’t waste time in the cold and dark environment at night. Set your alarm clock for 4:00 AM because you will not be able to sleep well tonight as you will be excited about tomorrow’s adventure.
Activity: Trek (3 to 4 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4450m./14,600ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Tea house
Day 13: Thorong Phedi to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass
Here we go. This is what makes the entire Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek worth everything. At 4:00 AM, you set off on a journey into the dark, cold morning and make your way up steep slopes through frost-covered paths. The first few meters of climbing out of Thorong Phedi are nothing with headlamp guiding the way. Suddenly, as dawn begins to take shape, the surrounding mountains get lit up with beautiful tones of pink and gold. You forget all about the pain with the view that make it worthwhile.
Getting up Thorong La at 5,416 meters, the pass is known for a gigantic heap of prayer flags flapping in the cold air is an immense accomplishment. Stop and breathe, take photos, and feel the excitement that comes with it.
After that you will descent from Thorang La all the way down to Muktinath. The path takes you through almost 8 kilometers while descending 1,600 meters. The whole landscape alters dramatically as you enter the dry rain shadow area. After all, you are now arriving at Muktinath, which is one of the holiest sites for Hinduism and Buddhism and where you can finally rest after such efforts.
Activity: Trek (7 to 9 hours)
Max. Altitude: 5416m./17,769ft.
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Once done with this experience, you will be driven down in a jeep through the Kali Gandaki which is the deepest gorge on Earth. Trip Information
Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Difficulty
The Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek falls into the moderate to difficult category. This is not a trek where one can simply take their time walking. It requires physical exertion and endurance and the understanding that altitude really does matter here. Underestimate it and the mountains themselves will soon show how difficult they are.
One particular point that every trekker should be take into account when planning the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake trek is the Thorong La Pass which sits at a height of 5,416 meters. Trekkers have to wake up very early, endure the chill, which is very cold, and climb for hours on end, all that while breathing in thin air. In addition, many travelers actually start feeling the effects of high-altitude sickness even before reaching the pass, getting such unpleasant sensations as headaches, fatigue, and restless sleep.
The Tilicho side of the trails add another challenge in the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek. The route from Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho lake is very steep and carries real landslide risk. You have to look out for altitude sickness as you will gain a lot of elevation in short amount of time.
You are typically covering between 5 and 8 hours of trekking per day. That sounds reasonable on the surface, but not so much after around ten days of gradually increasing efforts.
The positive part is that Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek doesn’t require any climbing experience whatsoever. Nothing like ropes and crampons here. Anyone who’s fit enough, follows the appropriate acclimatization plan and just simply has the willpower to go through with this will be able to make it to the end. This is what makes it important to understand how difficult it can be for proper Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek planning.
Preparation for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake
Good preparation will always determine if your trek will be a rewarding experience or a hell. Those who take their time to prepare well before starting this Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary will surely be rewarded with some of the best experience. Otherwise, it will just be a failure.
First, start preparing your physical body at least 2 to 3 months in advance. Doing some cardio traning like running, cycling, climbing stairs with a weighted backpack will very benefit during the actual trek. Don’t forget to train that leg and knee. The descents are going to be long and hard, and every knee joint is going to suffer greatly from them. So, add squats, lunges, weighted step-ups to your training regimen early on.
Equipment is another essential thing that most people do not take into account. A used trekking boots is very important than a brand new. Base layers, down jackets, and rain gear too. Blisters from brand-new boots and the higher altitude are very painful but easily avoided if you try them out long before you leave for the trek.
The other part of the preparation process entails a detailed review of the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary. Knowing what you are dealing with in terms of altitude gain, time needed, and type of the route helps to mentally prepare for the difficult parts of the trekking journey. Plus, knowing that you can take some extra days to rest in between makes it more bearable. Mental preparation should also include knowing that some days you are going to have a hard time, especially at high altitudes when you are cold and exhausted and wonder why you chose this.
Language and Communication for Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek
In Nepal, Nepali language is the official language, but you will find a unique blend of dialects in Nepal around the region of the Annapurna and Tilicho Lake. There are mainly Gurung, Manangi and TIbetan language and in each village, there’s more other language.
The good news about this area is that English is quite common in this area. Most of the tea house, hotels and local people of Manang, Pisang and Muktinath will definitely have English Speaking people.
There might still be time where you will have problem communicating with people and that’s where a guide for yourself will come in handy for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek. An experience guide will become your translator, translating every word and the meaning behind them as well. This will be crucial especially when approaching remote areas around Tilicho Lake Base Camp where there are fewer chances to find any English speakers.
With that being said, it will also be worth spending five minutes to learn some phrases in Nepali. Namaste, Dhanyabad, Ramro –hello, thank you, beautiful. Such simple words which make the locals very happy no matter how bad you say them. They will be especially grateful for your effort than the accuracy.
Mobile Network, Internet and Charging Facilities
It is possible to stay connected on the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek but don’t expect it to be high speed connection because you will be disappointed immediately. There are mainly two main mobile services in Nepal: NTC and NCELL. Between these two Ncell will words well in the first part of the hiking and Ntc words well in the higher part of the trek.
If we talk about internet, Wi-Fi access is available in almost all tea houses. But it’s better not to even try to use it because most of them are really frustrating. Very slow, unreliable ad sometime not working for a whole day. Once you get past Manang, the connection will get worse and by the time you reach Tilicho Base camp or Thorong Phedi, you are basically offline.
If you want to charge your device, there are charging facilities available in most tea houses on the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek with some small fee ranging between USD 1 to 3. Beyond Manang, solar power replaces electricity. Therefore, make sure you have a high-capacity battery pack that keeps your mobile, camera, and other gadgets charged in case you cannot charge them from any of the teahouses. Also, take a universal travel adaptor because there will be different sockets on different teahouses.
