The Everest Base Camp Budget Trek has to be one of the most rewarding adventures you could ever take in Nepal. It offers you the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view of the highest mountain peak in the word, stunning surrounding Himalayan, and the ancient culture of Sherpa community without spending all of your money.
Many people just assume that to complete the Everest Base Camp without missing out major highlight require huge budget. But that’s completely false. With a little bit of planning, smart decision of route, some flexibility, it is possible to conquer this famous trekking route with the little budget that you have without any regret and dissatisfaction.
The classic route to Everest Base Camp cover about 130 km starting point being Lukla which usually last for 12 to 14 days depending on the itinerary. On this route, trekkers go through several villages: Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, DIngboche, Lobuche and the Everest Base Camp Itself that lies at an altitude of 5,363 m.
That doesn’t necessarily mean that Budget trekking in Nepal involves neglecting your safety and actually sacrificing your experience. It just means making some wise decision such as staying at basic teahouse instead of expensive lodges, eating tasty local dal bhat instead of expensive foreign meals and spending on thing that you need than spending recklessly.
The Budget Everest Base Camp Trek usually costs from $950 USD for all independent trekkers. It includes permits, flights, and guide. All these aspects will be detailed throughout the guide.
What Make this a Budget Everest Base Camp Trek?
Here is the point that not all Everest Base Camp Trek should be expensive and luxurious. The Budget Everest Base Camp Trek can provide you with the opportunity to enjoy the adventure without spending too much money.
First of all, how you choose your transportation affect a lot in your cost. Private flights to Lukla cost a lot of money, and using a shared flights can make the trip much cheaper. Especially because the most expensive transportation on this route is the Kathmandu-Lukla flight.
Accommodation works the same way. You will stay in the local teahouses during the whole trip which are local family-run guesthouses. There you will be offered a place for the night to sleep with a warm blanket, and a hot dinner, everything you really need after the long trip.
Food remains practical and local. The dal bhat, noodle soup, pasta, and other traditional dishes of teahouses ensure you don’t spend too much money on food during your travels. Eating locally is not only affordable, but it is also highly energizing.
This Everest Base Camp Budget Trek offers everything that is essential during the trek. Epic Trek Nepal helps you to arrange your permit for Sagarmatha National Park, TIMS card, professional guide and transport from Kathmandu to Lukla, and vice versa. This is what you get with this package.
Just for your information, porter is not included in the basic Everest Base Camp Budge Trek package. But if you want one, you can arrange it on request where one porter carries up to 25 kg (shared between two trekkers). The stay in Kathmandu is not included either. Teahouses are organized by your guide during the trek, but you will pay for your stay and food on your own from place to place.
No additional luxury services are provided. There will be no private rooms with private toilets, no helicopters, and no luxurious meals. Budget treks in Nepal involve simplifying everything that is not essential.
The end result of this policy is quite obvious. The trek is available to everyone who want to see Mount Everest without any large financial investment. All you have to do is plan budget trekking in Nepal smartly.

You begin your day with a short fight from Kathmandu to Tenzing Hillary airport of Lukla, one of the most thrilling airports in the world. It takes about 45 min to reach Lukla, and after landing you start your trek right away.
The route follows an easy descend through forest and river valley of Dudh Koshi until you reach a small village called Phakding.
Today’s trek is not complicated as it serves as good preparation for what lies ahead. Phakding is located at an elevation of 2,610 meters, which is a bit lower than Lukla. So, you are getting used to the altitude without difficulty.
Activity: Flight and Trek
Max. Altitude: 2860m./9,383ft.
Day 3: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
This is one of the most memorable days of your entire trekking experience during the Budget Everest Base Camp Trek. This route follows along the Dudh Koshi river, through some awe-inspiring suspension bridges all the way up to the park entrance at Monjo, where your permit will be verified.
Once you cleared the park gate, the hike will ascend upwards steeply for a duration of about two hours to Namche Bazaar. It’s an exhausting climb, but the view at the end is simply amazing. You will get a sneak peek of Everest from your very first day of the trek.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)

Day 4: Acclimatization Day in Namche Bazaar
Today is a day for accimatization day, but it doesn’t mean rest day. There’s no such thing as rest day when it comes to the Everest Base Camp Trek. You will take an acclimatization hike toward Everest View Hotel which is located at 3,800 meters which provide panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam and other surrounding peaks.
After acclimatization hike, you will return back to Namche because there is a rule in trekking: Climb high, sleep low. It greatly decreases your chances from getting altitude sickness.
You can spend the remaining time exploring Namche. Go to the Sherpa Culture Museum, visit the weekend market if you have the opportunity. It’s also your last chance to buy snacks, supplies, and things you have forgotten.
Activity: Accilmatization Hike (3 to 4 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3440m./11,286ft.
Day 5: Trek to Tengboche
After Namche, you will trek toward Tengboche which is one of the spiritual and sacred monasteries in Everest Region.
The path goes down to Phunki Tenga and then starts going up to Tengboche. It is an uphill climb, but at a fairly moderate pace that should allow you to keep a constant speed.
If you reach Tengboche in the afternoon, there is a possibility that you will be able to watch the evening prayers in the monastery, a very impressive sight in an amazing place. The monastery is situated on the ridge with amazing views of the mountains around which is perfect for photography. Take enough time to rest tonight.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3860m./12,664ft.
Day 6: Trek to Dingboche
Now, the atmosphere starts to change drastically. The forest starts to disappear; air gets more thinner and snow peak Himalayas take over the sky.
During the trek, your first spot will be in Pangboche, a small village in Khumbu valley and then continuing through Imja Khola surrounded by beautiful views.
After hours of walking, you will finally reach Dingboche at an altitude of 4,410 m which you might get slight headache. So, eat hot meal, drink a lot of water and rest well.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4410m./14,469ft.
Day 7: Acclimatization Walk
Today is the second and last acclimatization day for your Everest Base Camp Budget Trek. For today acclimatization hike, you will go to Nangkharstand Hill at 5,083 m, which offer the panoramic view of Makalu, Island Peak, Lhotse and whole upper Khumbu valley.
The route will be quite steep in some part but nothing too challenging. Slowly and steadily, you will reach the top feeling proud of yourself. Then you descend to Dingboche to spend the night there once more.
After reaching the teahouse, eat, drink and rest well because tomorrow journey will be long and difficult.
Activity: Acclimatization hike (4 to 5 hours)
Max. Altitude: 5083m./16,677ft.
Day 8: Trek to Lobuche
Today’s trek is the most emotional part of Everest Base Camp Budget Trek. The journey continues from Dingboche to Thukla and the ascend to Thukla passes which is at an altitude of 4,620.
At the summit, you will see many memorial stone made in the memory of climber who lost their lives while doing the Everest Base Camp Journey. This is a very serious and emotion places for every trekker.
From there, you will walk downward toward the rocky glacier path till you reach Lobuche.
The landscape will be quite harsh and dramatic, different from all other areas along the route. It will get considerably colder here, and the wind might be strong. Once you arrive at your teahouse, put on all your clothes and eat a hot meal. Tomorrow you are going for EBC.
Activity: Trek (5 to 6 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4910m./16,109ft.
Day 9: Trek to Everest Base Camp and Back to Gorakshep
Toay is what you have been trekking for. You will get up early morning, have a breakfast and get ready for your final ascent to your destination.
From Gorak Shep it will take 2 hours to reach Everest Base Camp. The route is not easy, but with every step the excitement keeps growing more and more. When you get to Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters, your feelings of happiness and achievement will overwhelm you because now you are standing at the bottom of the world’s highest mountain.
Enjoy your time here and then make your way back to Gorak Shep for the night. Sleep well, tomorrow will bring you one more exciting experience.
Activity: Trek (7 to 8 hours)

Day 10: Hike to Kala Patthar and Trek to Pheriche
You will begin your today’s hike in the early morning before the sunrise toward Kala Patthar and trust me there’s a reason why this the best sunrise view from any trekking journey.
Kala Patthar, which is located at 5,555 meters provide you one of the most stunning views of Mount Everet that not many people have the opportunity to witness. When the sunrises the whole Everest peaks glows into golden color which feels like actual summit of the entire Everest Base Camp Budget Trek.
After enjoying the summit, you descent back to Gorak Shep for breakfast and then continuing the descending to Phericeh which is at an altitude of 4,240 meter.
Activity: Hike (7 to 8 hours)

Day 11: Trek Back to Namche Bazaar
This day will be one of the longest days of walking for the whole trip. You have to cover a lot of distance today as you descend from Pheriche back to Namche Bazaar, which lies at an altitude of 3,440 meters.
The path takes you back through Tengboche and Pangboche and you get to see the familiar scenes from a completely new point of view. Descending can be more difficult than ascending since your knees and ankles take more pressures when walking downhill. So, be cautious especially when the path is rocky.
Activity: Trek (7 to 8 hours)
Max. Altitude: 4240m./13,911ft.
Day 12: Trek Back to Lukla
There’s a strange sense of nostalgia during your last day walking along the trail. You follow the familiar trail back from Namche through Phakding down to Lukla, the starting point of your trek two weeks ago.
With most of the trail being downhill and well known to you already, you get to relax and appreciate the beauty of nature in this area.
Lukla is definitely a destination worth celebrating. Trekkers arrive here, finishing their adventures and sharing their stories about what happened in the mountains. Enjoy the celebration with other people on the same adventure, have dinner together. You have successfully finished your budget trip to the Everest Base Camp – congratulations!
Activity: Trek (6 to 7 hours)
Max. Altitude: 3440m./11,286ft.
Day 13: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu
Today you will take a scenic flight back to Kathmandu. Morning flight from Lukla depend on the weather so there might be delay when waking up in the morning.
Depending on the season and air traffic, the flight could go either straight to Kathmandu or first to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap. In peak trekking periods, the Lukla flights are directed to Ramechhap as a way of reducing congestion in Kathmandu airport. Epic Trek Nepal will inform you of your flight route.
After arriving in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel and you can enjoy hot showers, comfortable beds, and a variety of foods after being in the mountains for more than two weeks. Trip Information
How Difficulty is the Everest Base Camp Budget Trek?
The Everest Base Camp Budget Trek fall into the moderate to difficult trek because it not an easy trek. It requires you to be physically active through several days, walking like 6 to 7 hours each day through rough terrain, high altitude area with low oxygen and lots of ascending and descending.
The main difficulty is not the distance you will cover but the altitude. Walking at height over 3,500 makes it difficult for your body to move forward and if you skip the acclimatization day it’s over for you. The acclimatization day between the days is not just for resting, it’s also for adapting to the low oxygen.
Most healthy people can easily make this Budget Everest Base Camp trek with enough preparation. While age is not a problem but how your physical fitness and mental strength really make the difference. Many Physically fit trekkers in their 20s, 30s, 40s and even 50s have completed the trek EBC in every season of the year.
Cold weather, which is stronger at high altitudes, makes this trek even harder. The temperature at night in Lobuche and Gorak Shep go much below zero. The proper equipment, correct attitude and the will to endure some discomforts are the most important things here.
It all depends on your preparation, patience and ability to follow your body’s signals during the trekking.
Preparation for the Everest Base Camp Budget Trek
Proper preparation will ensure that you have a wonderful trekking experience. While you do not have to be an elite athlete, you must do some preparation to endure the harsh condition, high altitude and rough terrain.
Begin with cardio exercises at least eight to twelve weeks before your trek date. Cycling, running, stair climbing and swimming all contribute to building the endurance that you require while out there hiking. The EBC trail requires hiking for about five to seven hours each day. So, your body need to be properly prepared for the challenge.
Go for hiking carrying a heavy backpack as much as possible to train for route, which is rough, rocky and quite steep in some areas. Weekends hiking in such conditions will greatly help your legs and joints more than going to the gym only.
Mental preparation is also equally important. knowing what might happen during the trek help you to calm yourself and slowly move forward without panicking.
Finally, get all the permits in order beforehand. The permits to enter the Sagarmatha National Park and TIMS card can be obtained from Epic Trek Nepal, but understanding what services are covered and what you should pay yourself will help you budget properly.
Accommodation on the Everest Base Camp Budget Trek
The accommodation during your Everest Base Camp Budget trek will be in a basic teahouse, which will be arrange by your guide, but the cost of each accommodation doesn’t include in the package, and you have to pay yourself. The cost of each teahouse depends on the altitude. As you go higher the price of the teahouse also increases because they have to carry all the supply in higher altitude using yaks or by themselves in their back. In lower villages like Namche, the price of staying cost around $3 to $8 per night and in higher village like Lobuche and Gorakshep, it cost around $10 to $15 per night.

Meals during the journey are not just for taste, it’s for satisfying your hunger and giving you energy for moving forward. The best thing is that the meal on the trail is very filling and affordable when you make right choices.
By far the most valued meal during the journey is dal bhat. Dal bhat is a Nepalese dish which consists of rice, lentil soup, vegetable dishes, and pickles. The cost of this meal ranges from $4 to $7 and usually it’s included free refills. With dal bhat, you will get all the necessary carbohydrates for the day ahead. There is a popular phrase about dal bhat: “dal bhat power, 24 hours.”
Other items include noodle soup, fried rice, pasta, eggs, and Tibetan bread. These items are also affordable and filling. Chocolate, snacks, drinks become increasingly expensive as you move higher, so make sure you buy in Namche Bazaar before moving higher.
Go for boiled or filtered water, not bottled water at each rest stop. Boiled water is available at the teahouses at a very nominal cost, and by carrying your own water bottle with purification tablets, you save a lot of money.
Approximately, you will spend $15 to $25 a day on food while Budget trekking in Nepal.
