What is Tiji Festival?

Tiji Festival is an annual festival that is celebrated every year in Lo Manthang, the capital city of Upper Mustang. It is celebrated for 3 days which is attended by locals, monks, and visitors from various part off the world.

Tiji Festival is an old festival connected to Tibetan Buddhism history. There was a legend saying that there used to be a god called Dorje Jono who was able to save their nation from a demon that wanted to destroy their kingdom by destroying their source of water.

The name “Tiji” comes from the word “Tenchi,” meaning “a prayer for world peace.” Such meaning plays a crucial role in all events at the festival since all dances have the spirit of protection and hope in them.

The festival has deep religious and cultural significance because monks of the local monastery prepare sacred masks and dresses several weeks before the festival. They also perform cham and ritual dances presenting the battle of good against evil.

For the people of Lo Manthang, Tiji is not just some performance for tourist. It holds a deep meaning behind every step which helps protect their community for the coming year.
