The Pumdikot hike is classified as an easy to moderate level, but it should be clear why it is described that way to know exactly what to expect from this hike.
There are different paths, from forest trails to farmlands, some of them are natural dirt roads, while other have some parts covered in stone or paved steps, particularly around the temples. The trail doesn’t require any technical skill, but it does have a lot of uphill walking.
The uphill parts make the challenge for this hike. There are no warmup or flat part, you will have to climb the whole way up to the Pumdikot Viewpoint and back down. That is why it is an easy to moderate one as the ascent may be more difficult that you expect.
For the physical terms, it doesn’t require trekking experience or high-altitude acclimatization. If you can handle some stair or moderate uphill walk, you should be able to manage it comfortably. It is a good choice for both beginners and families although people with knee problems and mobility issues must be aware of the uphill and downhill walk involved.
The Autumn season is generally considered the most favorable time when hiking in Pokhara. As the monsoon rain clear the sky, it gives a crystal-clear view of the mountain and increases the visibility of Pumdikot Viewpoint.
This season is also good for hiking in Pokhara because of warmer days and blooming rhododendron in the hills. The views of the mountain are also likely to be clear, but this might always be the same because of hazy skies. If you want more visibility, the morning usually provides clearer views than the afternoon.
While it gets cooler during this time, especially in the mornings and evenings, the weather becomes very clear, which may be good for enjoying the view of the mountains. The path will be easy to walk but be ready to change your clothes for the difference in temperature between the ascent and the top of the mountain.
This is probably the least visited time to hike, with many rain showers, slippery paths, and foggy conditions that will prevent viewing the mountains. This is not the right time to go on this hike.
Since Pumdikot is a short hike, you don’t need specialized gear. Just few practical items are enough to walk comfortably.
The trail includes some uneven and sometimes loose surface, so good hiking shoes that have descent grip will be useful during both ascent and descent.
There is no natural source of water during the hike where you can refill, so you need to bring enough water to cover the entire time, especially during the hot weather day.
Most of the path is fully expose to sunlight, especially when you climb out of the forest area. Carrying sunscreen will be very helpful to protect your skin from sunburn.
It is also useful for the same reason of protecting yourself from the sun when going uphill.
Even though this hike is not up on the mountains, it may still get cold on top at the viewpoint, especially in the morning, evening, or during winter.
Don’t forget this if you want to capture every moment of Pokhara Valley and mountain that you witnessed.
Big enough for carrying water, food and extra clothing but no need for a bulky backpack.
If trekking during the monsoon period (June-August), it will be worthwhile carrying a light raincoat or poncho.
