Namaste! One of our team awaits you at Tribhuvan International Airport, holds a banner with Epic Trek Nepal, and transport you to your hotel. After checking in, take a shower and rest a little bit, as Kathmandu is noisy and crowded, give yourself enough time to acclimatize.

Day 2: Drive Kathmandu to Khudi via Besisahar

You wake up with an early breakfast and head away from the town towards Prithvi Highway. The highway will follow Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers throughout most of the journey. Fewer buildings and more green hills are to be expected.

It will take seven to eight hours of travel, so we take a break for lunch and to stretch our legs. You should keep an eye out for the terraced fields, suspension bridges and tea stalls on the side of the road. Our driver is familiar with the route and our guide will tell us tales of where we travel through.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive at Besisahar, which serves as the district headquarters of Lamjung. It’s only a short ride from there to Khudi. Relax in your guesthouse by the river and enjoy a peaceful dinner. After dinner, your guide will tell you about tomorrow’s Mad Honey Hunting in Nepal experience.

Day 3: Trek Khudi to Ghalegaun (2,100m)

Today you wear your boots and begin hiking. The trail begins at Khudi, crosses the river, and ascends through rice paddies, small farms, and forests. Most of the trail is paved with stone stairs. Hike slowly and take water frequently.

You will find houses along the way and the villagers wave to you from their front doors. Sometimes your guide pauses to describe the crops, trees and village life. Click your camera but seek permission before taking pictures of people.

Five to six hours later, you arrive in Ghalegaun. This Gurung village is located on the ridge. From here on clear days you can see the Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. You will be warmly greeted by your host family who serve you hot tea and delicious food.

Day 4: Ghalegaun to Bhujung (1,696m), Meet the Honey Hunters

You will begin your day with a leisurely breakfast and a walk through Ghalegaun. In case your hosts provide their culture program, you get an opportunity to hear the local songs, dances, and folklore. This is your first introduction to the Gurung hospitality before proceeding further.

Next, proceed with trekking to Bhujung, which is one of the biggest Gurung villages in the region. This trip lasts four to five hours, during which the trail runs down through forests and cultivated fields. Downhill portions strain your knees, thus making poles handy.

In the afternoon, you will meet with the honey hunters in Bhujung village. You see their special equipment and tools for honey hunting. Talk to them through your guide about the preparation of a honey hunt and the significance of the bees to the village. This is when the hunt gets real for you tomorrow, you get to witness it first-hand.

Day 5: Honey Hunting Day

This is the day for which you have come. You will wake up early and eat a light breakfast before following your guide to the viewing point. You sense the atmosphere to be peaceful and a little tense.

Before starting the hunt, the hunters offer a sacrifice and utter a short prayer. Then the ground team puts the ladder in place, smokes it, and inspects all the ropes. After receiving a signal from the lead hunter, the hunting starts.

Keep yourself hidden from sight and don’t speak loudly, following your guide’s instructions. Depending on the weather, light, and bees, the hunt can be delayed or interrupted. This experience of witnessing the ritual will leave a lasting impression on you.

All of this depends on weather conditions, light and bees, and thus may delay. Be patient as this experience will be unforgettable for a long time.

Day 6: Buffer Day: Second Hunt or Walk to Ghanpokhara (about 2,100m)

Bees are on their own timetable, so today leaves some space to accommodate them. If there is another harvest planned, you will follow the hunters to another point. If the first hunting event was postponed or changed its location, you have all the flexibility in today’s schedule.

If there isn’t a hunt going on, you have several good choices available. First, you can travel to Ghanpokhara, which is a peaceful village with rhododendron forest surrounding it. It takes an easy-paced hike through forest and meadows.

Alternatively, you can stay in Bhujung, prepare dal bhat with a local host family and explore the streets talking to villagers. In any case, you leave the day relaxed and prepared to return to Pokhara tomorrow.

Day 7: Drive to Pokhara

After breakfast, you will bid farewell to the local family, hunters and leave the village. A transport will take you down from the hills to Pokhara. The travel time is about four to five hours depending on the route.

At Pokhara, you check into your hotel located near lakeside. This afternoon is at your leisure. You can take a walk along Phewa Lake, hire a boat ride, visit the local craft shops and if the skies are clear, you can catch a glimpse of the Annapurna range from the lake itself.

Day 8: Fly or drive to Kathmandu

How difficult is the Mad Honey Hunting in Nepal?

This Mad Honey Hunting trek is considered one of the most difficult and dangerous ones for hunters in the Himalayas, but not for you. You mostly watch it from the ground doing nothing., just watching a history in front of you.

For the first part of the trek, there are some trekking days which is easy to moderate difficult. You just need basic fitness and not any mountain experience. If you can hike up to 5 to 6 hours daily, then it’s enough for you to do this trek.

During the hunting day, first comes the climb to the cliff. But before that local villager perform a sacrificial ritual for the success of the hunt. Then after they begin their climb and hunt. This activity is very difficult and technical as the bees make their combs on the vertical wall of rock far above the ground. Hunters go up the bamboo and rope ladder that constantly shakes under their feet which they have to balance it while collecting the honeycomb.

Next – the bees. They protect their nests from intruders fiercely. Although the smoke helps them to become quiet, there are moments when stings happen. Here hunters have to be very calm and experienced.

There is additional other factor that holds the process, such as weather conditions – wet rocks, strong wind, and poor visibility. This is why the leader hunter can stop the process anytime.

Permits and Rules

Mad Honey Hunting in Nepal requires fewer permits than the average trek. The trek does not enter any restricted areas, so no special trekking permit is required. Since the majority of the trek passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area like Ghalegaun and Bhujung, ACAP entry permit will be required.

Follow instructions of the lead hunter on Day 5.
Stay at the ground viewing point and never come close to the cliff or the combs.

Ask permission before you take photos of people, houses or ritual offerings.
Take away your trash, including plastic bottles.

Be careful when purchasing mad honey as a souvenir since it is prohibited by many countries and can be confiscated during the custom check. We do not sell it, but still, make sure that you know about the restrictions of your country.

Cultural Experience and Traditional Honey Hunting

No one ever becomes a honey hunter by studying it in a book. In Gurung villages, young men years observing their father, uncles and elders before they ever attempt to climb up the ladder. They learn to interpret the environment, the weather and even the bees themselves.

     Verified Once in a life time experience in Annapurna Circuit trek
I had an amazing experience on the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Epic Trek gave me such a memorable adventure from start to finish. I especially want to thank the Bhanubhakta, who accompanied me throughout the entire trek. He was incredibly helpful, kind, and always made sure everyone was safe and comfortable. I truly appreciate his support and highly recommend Epic Trek to anyone planning a trekking adventure in Nepal!

     Verified Everest base camp trek in good hands
Awesome experience. They were very knowledgeable people about the paths, the altitude adaptation and the best pace to keep. They were always nice and accommodating to my needs. It's been one of the best experiences in my life. I fully recommend it.
